Here’s the first four definitions again –ġ. What did the writers of the Declaration of Independence have in mind? From what we know of them – I kind of doubt that they meant the eat, drink and be merry that we tend to think of today as our “right”. The life of eat, drink and be merry that we had in mind apparently isn’t what the Creator meant. If we look at some of the synonyms for the word life – I suspect we’re closer to what most people would consider life – activity I’m going to bet that few people think of “life” in those terms. But I wonder – do they mean the same thing to us as they do to the Creator to whom we assign those words? Lifeġ. The Declaration of Independence does say the words above. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.īut just how “self-evident” are they? Maybe that depends on just who “self” is?
